What period stock and steep pitches throw up.
Tall, exposed and full of soft mortar. Repointing plus new lead flashings is the most common single job we do on this kind of stock.
Original clay pegs and Welsh slate outlive their fixings. A strip, sort and re-lay reusing the sound tiles keeps the character and is very often the right answer.
Period roofs have far more valleys and abutments than modern ones, and each is a place water can get in. Lead-lined valleys are the durable answer.
Where a roof has been leaking quietly for years, the battens and sometimes the rafter feet have gone. It only becomes visible when the roof is opened up, so we flag the risk before we start rather than after.
A conservation area roof needs a covering that suits the building. Sourcing reclaimed or matching handmade tiles is part of the job here in a way it is not on a 1960s estate.
