“What a joy to find such a professional, approachable and honest company. From first enquiry to completion, Dean and his team were always in contact, turned up when they said they would, were honest about completion taking into account the weather and got the job done.”
Roofers in Arundel · BN18
Old roofs, steep pitches, a lot of chimneys.
Arundel and the villages around it have some of the oldest and most characterful roofs on our patch — and some of the most demanding. Steep pitches, clay peg tiles, natural slate, conservation area constraints and stacks that have been up for two hundred years.

A town where the roof is part of the listing.
Arundel is a conservation town in the shadow of a castle, and its roofs reflect it: steep-pitched clay peg tiling, natural slate, handmade plain tiles, and a great many chimney stacks — most of them tall, most of them exposed, and a good number of them on buildings where you cannot simply swap the covering for whatever is cheapest.
Steep pitch is a mixed blessing. It sheds water beautifully, which is why these roofs have lasted, but it also means every job needs proper access and proper fixing, and it means a slipped tile has further to travel before it lands on somebody. Working on them safely is most of the skill.
Beyond the town itself, BN18 runs out across the villages and the Arun valley, where the stock is a mixture of period cottages, farm buildings and twentieth-century housing. It is a genuinely varied patch and it is a twenty-five minute run from Worthing.

The Arundel repair list.
What period stock and steep pitches throw up.
Chimney stacks and flashings
Tall, exposed and full of soft mortar. Repointing plus new lead flashings is the most common single job we do on this kind of stock.
Slipped peg tiles and slates
Original clay pegs and Welsh slate outlive their fixings. A strip, sort and re-lay reusing the sound tiles keeps the character and is very often the right answer.
Valleys on complex roofs
Period roofs have far more valleys and abutments than modern ones, and each is a place water can get in. Lead-lined valleys are the durable answer.
Rotten timber under old coverings
Where a roof has been leaking quietly for years, the battens and sometimes the rafter feet have gone. It only becomes visible when the roof is opened up, so we flag the risk before we start rather than after.
Matching materials sympathetically
A conservation area roof needs a covering that suits the building. Sourcing reclaimed or matching handmade tiles is part of the job here in a way it is not on a 1960s estate.
Storm damage in the villages
Exposed rural positions and mature trees. We run a 24/7 call-out and cover the whole BN18 area.

Like-for-like repair to a listed building generally does not need consent; changing the material, the colour or the form of the roof almost certainly does. We will tell you which side of that line we think your job falls on and point you at getting it confirmed with the conservation officer. What we will not do is quietly change the appearance of a listed roof and let you deal with the consequences.
Usually. Reclaimed clay pegs and handmade plain tiles are available and we will source to match rather than defaulting to whatever is on the shelf. Where a perfect match genuinely is not available we will tell you before you commit, not after the scaffold is up.
Yes — the whole of BN18, including Amberley, Slindon and the villages out along the Arun valley, and up towards Pulborough and Storrington.
Somewhat, yes. Steep pitches need proper access and proper fixing, and the work is slower because everything has to be secured. On the other hand a steep roof sheds water so well that it often needs far less remedial work than a shallow one of the same age.
